Middle School Students Shine
Brightly on 1st Day of School
It’s back to school time. For the
students at Sacred Heart School in Shawnee, the start of school
is a chance to give back to others and focus on their community.
“I like beginning the year easing into the classroom
and thinking about others a little,” said eighth grade
student Abbie K. This year, middle school students spent their
first day outside of the classroom collecting food for the
needy and getting to know each other.
Students began their morning with Mass.
Fr. Craig helped students understand their responsibilities
toward themselves, each other, and their community. With these
skills fresh in mind, teams went out into the neighboring
subdivisions on a Scavenger Hunt for Food. Teams asked community
members for food items to be donated to local pantries. When
they returned, they were amazed at the generosity of others.
Students stacked the items in the main lobby of the school
as a reminder of how good it feels to put others first.
“I really liked going out into the
community knowing I was helping people who don’t have
as much as I do,” said seventh grade student Nick O.
“Our school came together and did something that shows
others what we stand for here at Sacred Heart.”
After spending the morning in service, students
spent the afternoon in team-building and reflection. Students
gathered at Garret Park, had lunch together, and reflected
on ways to “let their light shine” this year.
Youth group director John Coakley reminded students of the
“daily do’s” such as Mass, the rosary, and
prayer. The day ended in music and prayer with students ready
to reflect positive attitudes here at Sacred Heart.
