Local Artist Visits SHS
Art Classes
Derrell Southern, parishioner of Sacred
heart and local sculptor, visited SHS Art classes on Wednesday,
February 16th. He showed the 2nd grade and middle school classes
some of his wood pieces varying from small sculptures, pictures
of 10 foot crosses of the Suffering Christ commissioned for
several Catholic churches both in Kansas and throughout the
United Staes, and a wooden award he made for Neil Armstrong.
He explained his process to approaching his artwork, showed
them some of his tools and finished art pieces. Then the students
enjoyed working with clay under his guidance. His message
was clear," You can all be artists...just keep practicing."
