St. John's Childhood:

St. John was the third child of Agnes Neumann. His father owned a small stocking mill and he was also a minor village official; his mother attended mass daily. John loved to read books and learn from them. He was gifted with the ability to have a quick mind for studying and an unusual ability for languages. When St. John was seven years old he began to receive the sacrament of penance. When he was at the age of eight he was confirmed by the Bishop of Budweis on the special occasion of the first Episcopal visit to Prachatitz that the villagers could remember.

Growing Up:

John Neumann spent two years at the diocesan seminary in Budweis. Then he transferred to that of the archdiocese at the University of Prague, there he completed his studies in 1835. His academic record was excellent! He had exceptional skill in mastering languages. Including his native German and Bohemian, he could speak Italian, Spanish, Greek, and Latin. Wow! that is a lot of different languages. When he was in Prague he learned to understand English and French as well.

Later on at the Seminary, St. John made up his mind to become a missionary in America. Thousands of German Catholics had emigrated to the United States. Whether St. John lived in the Crowded cities or in a settled farm country, most of the emigrants spoke German and were out of communication with there church. Urgent appeals for the assistance of German speaking priests were being received, and Neumann dedicated his life to that service. (Actual words written by St. John Neumann.)

" My resolution was so Strong and Lively," he wrote, "that I could no longer think of anything else."
