St. Catherine of Sienna's memorial day is April, 29.( used to be April, 30.)
Canonized: July 1461 by Pope Pius II
Patron Saint of fire preventionLifespan: March 25, 1347 - April 29, 1380 She died of a mysterious and painful illness
that came without notice, and was never diagnosed properly.
St. Catherine was the youngest child in a big family. When she was only 6 she saw
Jesus in a vision appear and bless her. Her mom and dad wanted her to Mary, but she became a
Dominican tertiary. Then she had a vision in which she was in a mystical marriage with
Christ, And was presented with a wedding ring by the infant Christ.
It was just as well that she got such an early start. Over six hundred years later, her life still
strikes us as astonishing. In the next fourteen years Catherine lived the life of a dozen women.
She was an ambassador and peace-maker, a nurse and a healer and a powerful evangelist whose very
presence triggered innumerable conversions. She served as a counselor to Popes, queens, priests,
housewives, and condemned prisoners, while composing one of the great works of Christian mysticism.
Importantly, it was her status as a single laywoman that set Catherine of Siena free to answer a
call from God that would alter the course of Western history and result in her becoming the first
lay Doctor of the Church (as a Third Order Dominican, Catherine was not considered a nun).
The 25th child of a wool dyer in northern Italy, St. Catherine started having
mystical experiences when she was only 6, seeing guardian angels as clearly as the people they
protected. She became a Dominican tertiary when she was 16, and continued to have visions
of Christ, Mary, and the saints. St. Catherine was one of the most brilliant theological
minds of her day, although she never had any formal education. She persuaded the Pope to
go back to Rome from Avignon, in 1377, and when she died she was endeavoring to heal the
Great Western Schism. In 1375 Our Lord give her the Stigmata, which was visible only after
her death. Her spiritual director was Blessed Raymond of Capua. St, Catherine's letters,
and a treatise called "a dialogue" are considered among the most brilliant writings in the
history of the Catholic Church. She died when she was only 33, and her body was found
incorrupt in 1430.

in Rome she put herself up against the powers of evil that threatened to engulf the church.
For a whole year she lived corporally on the Blessed Sacrament and slept less than one hour
while she sent her zealous letters all over Europe, looking for help for the restoration of
unity and for peace, as daily she offered her life for this cause. One evening in January,
1380, while dictating a letter to Urban, she had a stroke. Partially recovering, she lived
in a mystical agony, convinced that she was wrestling physically with demons. She had a
second stroke while at prayer in St. Peter's and died three weeks later, on April 29th, 1380,
aged thirty-three. She was buried under the high altar in the Dominican church of Santa
Maria sopra Minerva, but her head was afterwards removed and taken to Siena,
where it is
enshrined in the Dominican church. She was canonized eighty-one years after her death. Her
feast is celebrated in Siena on April 29th, but elsewhere in the church on the next day.
