State of Kansas Assessment Information

State Assessment time is here for many Sacred Heart students. This year students in grades 4 and 7 are required to take assessments in math and science. Reading is required for grades 5 and 8, while grades 6 and 8 will be given the state social studies assessment. A writing assessment is not required this year but Sacred Heart has opted to administer the assessment to grades 5 and 8.

This year Sacred Heart students will be taking their assessments online which will begin the week of February 28th and be completed by March 10th. Due to inconclusive data on the effect that online testing has on student scores when compared to the traditional pencil paper version, the state has given schools the option of administering the test both ways, which Sacred Heart has elected to do. When students return from spring break they will be given the pencil paper version with each student receiving the higher of the two scores. While this is going to double the amount of time spent testing, we felt it necessary to give each student the opportunity to do his or her very best on these assessments. The No Child Left Behind Act and its Adequate Yearly Progress requirement have made state assessments the sole criteria for a schools state accreditation, with the ultimate goal being that 100% of a schools students demonstrate proficiency in math and reading as determined by the state assessment in those areas.
