SHS Students Advance to
State Level
Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge

Mark P. (5th grade), Elizabeth G.(6th grade)
and Nathan B. (7th grade) were the grade level champions of
the Sacred Heart School Reader’s Digest National Word
Power Challenge this fall and will advance to the Kansas state
level championship to be held at Basehor-Linwood High School
on February 27, 2004. The school level of the Challenge, at
which students answered oral and written questions on vocabulary,
was the first round in the 2nd annual Reader’s Digest
National Word Power Challenge.
The kickoff of this year’s Challenge was in early August,
with thousands of schools across the United States participating.
Each school’s grade level winners took a written qualifying
test, and now up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will
be eligible to compete in their state level championship.
The Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge will
provide an all-expense-paid trip to the national championship
for state champions and their escort in late March 2004. The
first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college
scholarship. The second and third place winners will receive
$15,000 and $10,000 college scholarships respectively.
