Think First
story contributed by 7th grader Emily
A.
On Tuesday morning, Sacred Heart welcomed
Dave and Joe from Think First which is a national injury prevention
program. Through this powerful program, Dave and Joe educated
our middle school students about using their minds to protect
their bodies. They encouraged them to listen to their elders
and explained ways to protect themselves from injury. Joe
and Dave also talked about the importance of wearing seatbelts
and helmets as well as the consequences that follow if you
don’t. Dave and Joe each live with their disabilities
as consequences from not making wise choices in their younger
years.
“I didn’t wear a helmet before
the health assembly, but it made me more cautious and I am
going to start wearing one because I learned about what can
happen to your brain if you don’t. One thing that scared
me is when he said that your brain is like jello,” said
Katie D, 6th grade.
Joe made an important point that you should
protect your head from injury and one way to do that is wearing
a helmet. Kathryn C, 7th grade, said, “Think First kind
of scared me, but it made me recognize the dangers of not
wearing a seatbelt and helmet. I always thought to myself
that the bad things you see on TV would not happen to me.
Thinking that is one of the things that Joe did when he was
younger, and he was paralyzed form his neck down. From now
on I am going to start thinking about how I can keep myself
safe.”
Nurse Carol was instrumental in bringing
Think First to Sacred Heart School for Health Fair Week. “It
was really great that Think First came to our school and told
their stores in hope that we might listen and learn,”
said Carol Farnsworth, SHS nurse.
